A golf trip to Spain: Costa del Sol
Published 2026-08-16
When the Finnish season ends in October, the Costa del Sol keeps going: the strip of coast between Málaga and Sotogrande has more golf courses than anywhere else in continental Europe — hence the nickname Costa del Golf. A direct flight to Málaga, a rental car and accommodation near a course is the classic winter recipe. Note: the Golfmökit.fi distance catalog currently covers Finland only — this guide is an overview, not a property listing.
The best-known courses
The area's most famous name is Valderrama in Sotogrande, host of the 1997 Ryder Cup. Around Marbella you play Los Naranjos and Aloha Golf among others, in the Mijas valley the two courses of Mijas Golf and the three-course La Cala Resort. Most courses welcome visiting golfers, but the most prestigious ones require a handicap limit and early booking.
When and how
The season runs year-round; for Nordic golfers the best months are October to May, when temperatures are playable and Finnish courses are closed. Málaga has direct flights from Helsinki, and the AP-7 motorway connects the whole coast. For accommodation, favour golf resorts or apartments near the courses on the Marbella–Estepona axis — and book green fees ahead in high season.
